Great home movies aren't simply one long clip. Instead, they are a series of moments that characterize a special event. To ensure you never miss memorable times due to poor video quality, inferior low-light performance, or shaky footage, Sony’s HDR-CX500V Handycam® Camcorder ($1,099.99; www.sony.com/handycam) is packed with advanced features.

The Best In Audio & Video

Not all high-definition camcorders are alike. Some record HD video at a resolution of 1280 x 720, and others will capture footage with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 but they can’t record audio in surround sound. There are no video or audio compromises with Sony’s HDR-CX500V. It records video at 1920 x 1080 using Sony’s back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor, which is designed to deliver vibrant, detailed video. You can also photograph 12MP still images. In terms of audio, the HDR-CX500V features a built-in zoom mic that records sound from every direction in Dolby® Digital 5.1. When you play back your home movies, the audio will be enveloping and sound the same as when you first shot your video.

It’s In The Details

With some camcorders, even HD models, shooting at sunset, night, or indoors will make your video appear grainy or dark. To offset this common problem, the HDR-CX500V’s back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor is approximately twice as sensitive to light as existing camera sensors when shooting in dimly-lit settings. Sony also included built-in Face Detection technology that will help make your photo subjects look their best. It can recognize up to eight faces and set a focus for the most prominent people that are within your frame, selecting a color level that makes everyone’s skin tone look natural. You can also select detected faces to serve as a photo’s focal point by using the camera’s large LCD touchscreen. And to further guarantee you get perfect shots, the Smile Shutter™ feature will only let the camera snap a photo as soon as the subject smiles.

Smooth & Professional

Holding a camcorder by hand can often result in shaky video. To help avoid this, the HDR-CX500V includes Sony’s Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with Active Mode, which is a moveable lens element that compensates for any unsteady movements you make while holding the camera. To offset any accidental leans or bumps, the camcorder also includes 3-Way Shake Cancelling. The combined stabilizing technologies help you create video with exceptionally smooth movement, which is ideal for shooting in places where using a tripod wouldn’t be feasible.

For The Record

The HDR-CX500V allows you to record directly to its internal 32GB flash memory* or to removable Memory Stick PRO Duo™ memory cards. And you can transfer video or images from the camcorder’s flash memory to the Memory Stick® media, giving you the ability to back up footage and snapshots in Full HD quality without using a PC. If you’re seeking more built-in storage, Sony’s HDR-CX520V doubles that to 64GB of flash memory.** You can also geotag your photos and videos to see where you captured the media using popular online mapping services.

From your initial video capture to creating the final product, Sony’s HDR-CX500V Handycam® Camcorder has you covered.
