Toshiba SD-P2600 Portable DVD Player | |
|
$699.99 www.toshiba.com Toshiba's SD-P2600 covers all the portable DVD player bases. It includes enough accessories to use it almost anywhere and serves up high-quality video in the process. At 8.9 diagonal inches and with a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, the unit's screen is large enough to provide a good picture without sacrificing the player's portability. The progressive-scan player delivers sharp images to the device's LCD. Its contrast and color accuracy are good, though black levels aren't anything to write home about. The lack of display configuration options prevents any tweaking, but overall the picture is fine for a portable player. The SD-P2600 has a full complement of easy-to-use controls. The on-screen menus leave a little to be desired, though, with too many options lacking any clear hierarchy. The player's battery life is good. We consistently clocked more than three hours of play from a full charge. The disc's door seems a little flimsy though; we're apprehensive about how well it will hold up under tough road conditions. The Li-Ion (lithium-ion) battery weighs about as much as the unit itself, but it doesn't add a lot of bulk in the case. Included composite and component cables (plus an S-Video jack) let you connect the SD-P2600 to any TV, an extra bonus for travelers. You can also take your music on the road; the player supports CD audio and DVD Audio, plus MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) playback from CD-R/RWs. The player even reads SD (Secure Digital) and MMC (MultiMedia Card) cards and displays JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group) images. The SD-P2600 has a street price around $500 and has similar playback options and screen size as other products in this price class. Its solid picture quality and flexibility push it ahead of the competition. If you're willing to sacrifice screen size and playback options, you can find a cheaper portable DVD player. But if you want a good picture, this player is a solid buy. by Gregory Anderson |
